History of Ballooning

The Montgolfier brothers, born in Annonay, France, were the inventors of the first practical balloon. The first demonstrated flight of a hot air balloon took place on June 4, 1783, in Annonay, France. Montgolfiere Balloon Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier, paper mill owners, were trying to float bags made of paper and fabric. When the brothers held a flame near the opening at the bottom, the bag (called a balon) expanded with hot air and floated upward. The Montgolfier brothers built a larger paper-lined silk balloon and demonstrated it on June 4, 1783, in the marketplace at Annonay. Their balloon (called a Montgolfiere) lifted 6,562 feet into the air. First Passengers On September 19, 1783, in Versailles, a Montgolfiere hot air balloon carrying a sheep, a rooster, and a duck flew for eight minutes in front of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and the French court. First Manned Flight On October 15, 1783, Pilatre de Rozier and Marquis d'Arlandes were the first human passengers on a Montgolfiere balloon. The balloon was in free flight, meaning it was not tethered. On January 19, 1784, a huge Montgolfiere hot air balloon carried seven passengers to a height of 3,000 feet over the city of Lyons. Montgolfier Gas At the time, the Montgolfiers believed they had discovered a new gas (they called Montgolfier gas) that was lighter than air and caused the inflated balloons to rise. In fact, the gas was merely air, which became more buoyant as it was heated.

Quote of the Day

"The only thing that stands between a man/woman and what he/she wants from life
is often merely the will to try it and the faith to believe that it is
possible."

Brazilian Balloon Behind House

I though this picture was coool. I took it while trying to track the FESTO balloon. The blown up face is a hot air balloon of a Greek Angel. Its actually a Brazilian balloon on tour up in Canada. The balloon is huge!!!

TAKING OFF

Endless Thoughts

Doesnt even seem real. It even looks as if a graphic designer created it. But nope!! I took this during my plane flight from Houston to Columbus.

TROPIC BALLOONING in MEXICO

Down low on the ground it was all shadows without any sun. As the balloons took off and went to a higher altitude the sun shined on the balloons. Making them really stand out alot. The palm trees kinda made a border around the picture.

Horses and Balloons

While tracking the balloons and
taking pictures in Guanajuato. I managed to take one with these 2 horses and the
red balloon in the distance.

SUNRISE TAKE OFF

Around 7:15am in Guanajuato Mexico last year, 20 balloons took off to fly through the Mexican countryside.

Different View from Below

I thought this shot would give people a different view of ballooning. Nothing special...but different.

HONEY BEAR BALLOON

I thought this was a coool balloon. It was called the honey bear balloon. If you look closely you'll see a lil bee on the bears nose. I took this picture while i was in Canada.

PRE-FLIGHT CHECK

Just checking everything in the basket before inflation of the balloon begins. This picture was taken in St.Jean sur Richeleau, Quebec, Canada in 2004. In the background you'll be able to see large crowds ready to see several balloons take off.

UPSIDE DOWN BALLOON

HERE's A BETTER VIEW OF THE UPSIDE DOWN FESTO HOT AIR BALLOON. FROM A SIDE VIEW YOU'RE USUALLY UNABLE TO SEE THE REAL BASKET. NO MATTER WHERE THESE BALLOONS GO IN THE WORLD...THEY ALWAYS AMAZE PEOPLE. ALOT OF PEOPLE THAT DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT BALLOONING THINK THAT THE UPSIDE DOWN BALLOON IS IN TROUBLE OR IS ABOUT TO CRASH. ITS THE TALK OF THE TOWN, NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE.

DEVIL IN THE SKY

DEVIL hot air balloon taking off above the upside down FESTO balloon. If you turn the picture upside down it looks like the devil is falling out of the balloon.

Not the Best of Landing Spots

With very few places to land before sunset....this was the best place to land. In the middle of a forest. It was sooo hard to retrieve this balloon. The chase crew wasnt able to get the truck through thick thick mud.

RUSS DURING INFLATION

Me during inflation of the right side up FESTO hot air balloon in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada in 2004

SCENES OF THE SKY

I took this picture during our inflation of the FESTO BALLOONS at the St.Jean sur Richeleau Balloon Festival just outside of Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 2004. You can see several special shape hot air balloons.

PUMP'D UP and READY 2 GO

This was inside of the FESTO upside down balloon during the balloon festival in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 2004.

Quote of the Day

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow even harder".
